Advancing Underutilized Crops Knowledge Using SWRL-enabled Ontologies - A survey and early experiment

چکیده
Due to their powerful knowledge representation formalism and associated inference mechanisms, ontology-based approaches have been increasingly adopted to formally represent domain knowledge. We propose the use of ontologies to advance knowledge-sharing on underutilized crops and propose how to integrate those ontologies with rules for added expressiveness. We first present a survey on the use of ontologies in the field of life-sciences with emphasis on crop-related ontologies, and justify why we need a new formalism. We then present the UC-ONTO (an Underutilized Crops Ontology) as a case study showing the integration of OWL (Web Ontology Language) ontologies with Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL) rules for added expressiveness.

Cultivation and use of underutilized crops is gradually popularizing in many countries since they create several benefits for the man and the environment. Same as in many other countries, a large number of useful underutilized crop species are available in Sri Lanka as well. Although traditional people had used them in a great deal in many different aspects of their life, the present generation...

متن کاملAn Executive Approach Based On the Production of Fuzzy Ontology Using the Semantic Web Rule Language Method (SWRL)
Today, the need to deal with ambiguous information in semantic web languages is increasing. Ontology is an important part of the W3C standards for the semantic web, used to define a conceptual standard vocabulary for the exchange of data between systems, the provision of reusable databases, and the facilitation of collaboration across multiple systems. However, classical ontology is not enough ...
متن کاملUsing semantic web rules to reason on an ontology of pseudogenes
MOTIVATION Recent years have seen the development of a wide range of biomedical ontologies. Notable among these is Sequence Ontology (SO) which offers a rich hierarchy of terms and relationships that can be used to annotate genomic data. Well-designed formal ontologies allow data to be reasoned upon in a consistent and logically sound way and can lead to the discovery of new relationships. The ...
متن کاملCombining SWRL rules and OWL ontologies with Protégé OWL Plugin, Jess, and Racer
The presentation concerns a draft implementation with Protégé OWL Plugin for SWRL, based on the RDF concrete syntax of the SWRL proposal. A first prototype of a SWRL Tab Widget has been achieved. It is a bridge between Protégé OWL, Racer, and Jess, intended to help reasoning with SWRL rules combined with OWL ontologies. A small example is given including an OWL ontology representing the family ...
